Designing Your Movement Space

The purpose of a personal movement practice is to cultivate inner harmony, balance and strength. Your personal space needs to be a place that nurtures these qualities. It provides the support that will naturally enrich your experience. When needing a calm respite from the stressful, fast paced rhythms of the day, you have a place where you can regather all the scattered parts of yourself.

Simply use your imagination to create a nurturing, user-friendly environment. Having a clear open space supports the ability to turn your senses inward so you can listen to your current needs. You will need adequate floor space and clear wall space. In the Resources page you will see some ideas for a mat. Also you will need a folding chair and 3 blankets. Over time you can equip your space with movement props that expand your practice. The Resources page has several suggestions.

A welcoming environment is a key feature of a successful home movement practice. You will need the ability to control the temperature of your movement space; this is especially true in the colder months. Often you are on the floor, where it is even colder. The body contracts and resists movement when it is cold or dehydrated. Enjoy designing a truly comfortable space for yourself!
